The impact of advertising on people´s decisions

By Nicolás Calderón

Have you ever considered what plays and important role on most of consumers´decisions? Why does advertising have a great influence when making a choice? These two basic questions about the standing of either written, televised or broadcasted media may have on social behaviour take us to analyze how society cam be manipulated through prediposition of facts. Customers may be deeply influenced by "media bias". Misleading information through news is an easy way to influence people. Such is the case of Canal 13 when last week alerted people to against Iphone 5.
The piece of news was broadcasted as informative; however, no trace of information was released regarding a competitor´s sponsorship for the mentioned station.

Canal 13 took advantage of two giants smatphones companies to bias customers. In fact the station reported that Apple factories in China kept "sweat shops" exploiting children, who were paid less than one dollar a day, to assemble Iphone 5s, and that those devices pollute the environment.

This reporter investigation learned that Apple factories in China comply with all strict international labour standards. In addition, Canal 13 and Samsung are the official network and sponsor, respectively of the Chilean National Football team during Wold Cup. Samsung Galaxy is in direct competition with Apple Iphone 5. The station and the factory would increase not only rating but also profits. People are likely to watch shocking news, and a factory full a working children is surely one.

As it turned out wrong, the mentioned station clearly manipulated and biased a piece of information damaging not only the interests of two giants of the smartphone industry; more important is to highlight how relevant pieces of news were intentionally broadcasted to mislead and prejudice customers. Would you buy an Iphone 5 knowing that it was manufactured by small children? And those same ones are polluting our environment; Would you think it twice and compare with other alternatives?
